Grizzly bear response to translocation into a novel environment

چکیده

Context To mitigate conservation conflicts, some jurisdictions translocate large carnivores into novel environments where they have no previous experience. Behavioural responses of these individuals are not typically monitored to evaluate the impacts this management approach on animals or populations. Aims We examined how grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) involved in conflict responded after translocation. Methods used GPS location data compare translocated a environment (n = 12) with resident within new area 12). Our analyses investigated differences between groups relation exploration behaviour, habitat use and response human-caused mortality risk. Key results Translocated had higher movement rates, greater daily displacement revisited areas less frequently than did bears. They spent more time poor-quality was even lower quality second year selected for agricultural lands active oil gas wellsites. also potential risk However, avoided residential areas, which selected, crossed roads at same rate as Both campgrounds recreation sites. Only 25% engaged further behaviour translocation 67% survived over 2-year monitoring period. Conclusions This work found bears, showed that can survive without reoffending during critical few years following Implications Managers public should recognise translocating require explore learn their environment, process occur repeating conflict. When does re-occur, it be viewed part animal learning immediately failure. On basis amount near humans anthropogenic features, our findings suggest do pose threat

A Review of Grizzly Bear Harvest Management in British Columbia

This review builds on the information presented in Hamilton and Austin (2002). The purposes are: 1) to identify and present information on the outstanding scientific and management issues involved in assuring that hunting does not represent a conservation threat to grizzly bear populations and, 2) to outline potential future directions that are under consideration for grizzly bear harvest manag...

Discovery of the Skull of a Grizzly Bear in Labrador

The skull of a small, young adult grizzly bear was discovered in the course of archaeological excavation of an early historic Eskimo house in northern Labrador. This discovery confirms the rumoured presence of Ursus arctm in Labrador in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is suggested that the Labrador grizzly represents an eastward extension of the barren-ground grizzly population acro...

Grizzly Bear Density in Glacier National Park, Montana

We present the first rigorous estimate of grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) population density and distribution in and around Glacier National Park (GNP), Montana, USA. We used genetic analysis to identify individual bears from hair samples collected via 2 concurrent sampling methods: 1) systematically distributed, baited, barbed-wire hair traps and 2) unbaited bear rub trees found along trails. We u...
